Manual Toothbrush vs Electric Toothbrush

Our team at Dental Solutions of Central Park encourages all of our patients to brush their teeth twice a day for two minutes as part of their dental hygiene routine. But does it matter if you use a manual toothbrush or an electric toothbrush? Let’s review the differences.

Manual toothbrushes

Manual toothbrushes are an effective tool for cleaning your teeth. They are easily available and affordable for many people. They come in lots of colors and there are even character designs to entice children to brush. As long as you brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes, manual toothbrushes can help remove plaque and prevent gingivitis. Just be sure to use the right pressure when brushing your teeth. Brushing too hard might damage your teeth and gums. We recommend a manual toothbrush with soft bristles.

Electric toothbrushes

Electric toothbrushes may be more effective than manual toothbrushes. The micro-movements can remove more plaque from your teeth. Some electric toothbrushes even come with built-in timers to ensure that you are brushing your teeth for two minutes. Electric toothbrushes can do a better job cleaning hard to reach places and they are gentle and thorough at cleaning your gums.

Which is better?

Either toothbrush can remove plaque from your teeth so it’s really a matter of personal preference. Choose the type that you will be most likely to use because the most important thing is that you brush your teeth at least twice a day for two minutes. You can get significant results from a manual toothbrush. However, if you are looking for the most efficient toothbrush and have the budget, consider an electric toothbrush. One downside is that they cost more than manual toothbrushes. You not only have to pay for the toothbrush, but the replacement brush heads are also more expensive than manual toothbrushes.
