New Year, New Oral Hygiene Routine
January 14, 2022 12:23 amEvery new year, people come up with goals they want to achieve. Health resolutions like exercising are common, but have you considered improving your oral hygiene routine? Here are some ideas.
Brush better
Are you brushing your teeth at least twice a day for two minutes each time? Dentists recommend this routine to avoid tooth decay and gum disease. If you have a history of cavities, brushing more can help. Remember to replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months or when the brushes fray. Switching to an electric toothbrush can also improve your oral hygiene. Most have a timer to help you keep track of the two minutes.
Floss every day
If you haven’t developed a flossing habit, this is a great year to start. Flossing once a day removes plaque from between your teeth and protects your gum health. To avoid spreading around bacteria, use a clean section of floss for each tooth. There are a handful of flossing products, so choose the one that works best for you.
Drink more water
Staying hydrated is part of a great oral hygiene routine! Drinking enough water helps your mouth produce saliva, which washes away plaque. If you live in an area that adds fluoride to tap water, you’re also getting cavity protection.
Visit a dentist for professional cleanings & exams
You can have a great oral hygiene routine at home, but only a dentist can provide a professional cleaning and an exam. During an appointment, we remove tartar, which can’t be cleaned off at home. We also check for signs of dental problems. Issues like gum disease often begin without obvious symptoms, but an exam will catch it before things get worse.
